Sailing school

We run an RYA (Royal Yachting Association) sailing school from the island of Aegina close to Athens.

Sailing For All
Sailing a cruising yacht requires knowledge, skill, good leadership and teamwork. Special equipment can help compensate for lack of mobility or strength.

We offer Competent Crew and Day Skipper practical courses to those with a disability. This includes wheelchair users and the visually impaired. The courses will be available from May 2007 on a custom-built yacht, Hellas I.

Hellas I

47ft long, with a draft of 2.4m.
3 double cabins (2 with wheelchair access), two heads (1 with wheelchair access).
steering position which is suitable for the wheelchair user.
Three big winches in the cockpit area, two of which are power-assisted.
Speaking instruments for the visually impaired.
Fully battened lazyjack mainsail, self-tacking jib, and roller gennaker.
Air-conditioning / heating.
Bars along each side instead of guardrail; additional supports in galley area etc.
Equipment to assist in access ashore, into dinghy, and into the sea.
What to Expect
There will be no ‘passengers’ on this yacht. Everyone will be expected to play a part in sailing the boat, including steering, sail-trimming, and taking a turn in the galley. It will be hard work, but at the end of your course you will feel a real sense of achievement.

The courses are suitable for complete novices as well as those with previous dinghy sailing experience. Day Skipper candidates should either have an RYA Shorebased qualification or should enrol on one of our 9-day combined Theory and Practical courses. Please contact us for dates of these.
